About

All you need to know about the TamaCloey 2.5km Cliffside Odyssey...

This swim is brought to you through the partnership of Tamarama and Clovelly surf clubs and takes place on Easter Monday, 5th April 2010 at 11am.

The 2.5km course begins at beautiful Tamarama Beach, with the swimmers navigating a route south across Bronte Beach and past the spectacular Clovelly cliffs. Competitors then swim around Shark Point, before turning for the finish line at Clovelly Beach. Click here for more information about the course.

The Swim is a vibrant community and family event, with the new coastal walk providing family and friends a unique opportunity to follow their swimmers right through to the finish line at Clovelly. A BBQ and refreshments will be available at the Clovelly SLSC for all of the swimmers, friends and families. Both clubs are committed to providing a fun and safe event, offering up their facilities and hospitality to the swimmers and their families throughout the day.

When is it?

Easter Monday, 5th April 2010
Race starts at 11am
Registration and collection of caps and timing chips closes at 10:30am
Dash for Cash: 10:30am

Where is it?

From Tamarama Beach to Clovelly Beach, in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. There's a map and more details on the course page.

How long is the course?

2.5km

How much does it cost?

$30 for online entries
$45 for late entries on the day

Why should I register online first?

You save $10, and you will be entered into the correct wave based on your previous swimming history. Those who enter on the day will swim in later waves. There is also a limit on the number of swimmers, and last year we had to turn people away who wanted to enter on the day.

Tell me more about the seeded waves...

Most ocean swims send the competitors off in age-group waves, and some divide into male and female as well. The TamaCloey is different. Tamarama is a small beach and we cannot let hundreds of competitors start at the same time while still guaranteeing their safety. We have a larger number of smaller waves of swimmers, grouped according to their previous swimming history. Swimmers therefore swim with those of similar ability, avoiding the crush of faster swimmers trying to swim through slower swimmers, creating a safer and more enjoyable swim. There is therefore no elite wave.

We use the data from Ocean Swim Series to work out which wave you should be in. If you are from outside NSW, are new to ocean swimming, or for some reason don't have any swimming history on Ocean Swim Series, then email the Race Director with your 1km time to help us position you.

Teams

All members of a team will start in the same wave. We have team categories for anywhere between 2 and 6 swimmers. If you want to swim head to head against your friends, or have a friendly face at the start line, this is a great way to do so.

How do I get there?

It is recommended that you park at Clovelly and catch one of our courtesy buses to Tamarama to register. See the transport page for more info.

Will the swim be cancelled in the event of bad conditions?

The Race Director reserves the right to cancel the swim in the event of dangerous conditions, in which case no refund will be given as the costs of the swim have already been incurred.

However we have backup plans in the event of dangerous conditions which we hope will allow us to run an event. We have obtained permission from the various councils to start the event at Bronte, Tamarama, Coogee Beach, or Gordons Bay and finish the event at either Clovelly Beach or Gordons Bay. Between these four venues we are confident that we will be able to hold the race in some capacity in almost any conditions.

Can I wear a wetsuit or a high-tech swim suit?

You can but you will not be eligible for a prize. In order to be eligible for a prize the following rules regarding swimwear apply:
  • Swimmers must wear only conventional swimming costumes made from lycra and/or nylon and/or polyester.
  • No neoprene or other "high-tech" material that gives floatation support is allowed.
  • Male swimmers must wear only briefs or shorts with no coverage above the waist or below the knee.
  • Female swimmers must wear either one or two piece costumes with no arms or legs.
  • Lycra/Nylon/Polyster Rash Vests can be worn to protect from sun and stingers, however Neoprene or "high-tech" Rashies are not allowed.
  • If the water is cooler than 19C on the morning of the swim wetsuits will be allowed.

Will there be food and drink available?

Ah, the important stuff. There are a couple of cafes at Tamarama for that pre-race "training" espresso and energy-giving chocolate brownie. We recommend "M's" up the hill in Fletcher Street.

There will be a BBQ at Clovelly featuring meat from Australian Gourmet Meats at the end of the race for the all important sausage sandwich, and the bar will be open upstairs in the Clovelly Club House for refreshments.

How should I train for the event?

Only swimmers who have trained adequately for the 2.5km course should enter. For some extra training we recommend Bondi Fit who offer a variety of pool and surf swimming options. Check their website for details. Bondi Fit are also offering a free training session at Tamarama to all pre-registered swimmers. Time and Date to be advised.

Where does the entry fee go?

Any profit after the costs of running the event is split between Tamarama and Clovelly Surf Life Saving Clubs to support their volunteer surf-lifesaving activities and keep the beaches safe.
